Fashion Greats at Home: What Tory Burch Learned When She Had Time to “Slow Down and Reflect”

Like most creative industries, the fashion industry has taken a huge hit during the coronavirus pandemic—and some of the biggest names in fashion are no exception. With a new year beginning and the end of the pandemic in sight, is catching up with 12 fashion greats, as they recommend their go-to items for quarantine, and their hopes for the year to come.

In her year spent at home, Tory Burch has turned “many times” to the poem “Ithaka” by C.P. Cavafy, which includes the lines “Hope the voyage is a long one/May there be many a summer morning when/With what pleasure, what joy/You come into harbors seen for the first time.” The Executive Chairman and CEO of Tory Burch LLC, which began as a small store on Elizabeth Street in 2004, Burch says the pandemic has given her time to “slow down and reflect on why I founded this company—our mission is to empower women.”

As 2021 begins, she said, “We increasingly see ourselves as an activist brand; activists in the sense that we use our platform to create meaningful change and unity over division.”

She’s counting down the days until she can reunite with her mother, Reva, and friends and family—and also “do something normal, like going to J.G. Melon for a Bloody Bullshot and a cheeseburger.” But in the meantime she’s staying home, starting jigsaw puzzle competitions and getting quality time with her Instagram-famous dogs, Chicken, Slim, and Hercules.
